ABOUT BIOREMIP

The project Exploring and Exploiting Microbial and Plant Abilities and Interactions in Environmental Bioremediation” (BIOREMIP) will provide innovative, integrated, eco-efficient solutions to remove persistent pollutants from water and soil through bioremediation, in an inter, multi and transdisciplinary approach, by exploring and exploiting abilities of microbes and plants to eliminate target contaminants, individually or in reciprocal partnership.

The research will customize the plant/microorganism-soil/water-contaminants interactions to build synergic partnerships able to develop enhanced tolerance against contaminants toxicity. BIOREMIP will integrate the experience and knowledge of the research group with that of prevailing international research to go beyond the state-of-the-art and develop an integrated research strategy and appropriate bioremediation solutions by extending the currently studied triangle soil-microbes-plant into a rectangle soil-microbes-plant-contaminant. The overall objective is to develop, test and apply biotechnological systems able to remove inorganic and/or organic persistent pollutants from the environment. The specific objectives are focused on: exploring the ability of microorganisms and plants to remove contaminants from water and soils (3 heavy metals, 3 POPs) and their possible synergic interactions; ability of microorganisms (3 bacteria (PGPB) and 3 mycorrhizal fungi (MF)) to bioaccumulate the target contaminants; capacity of the selected plants (3 species) to bioremediate contaminated water and soils; symbiotic performance of microbial populations and plants, in various combinations; systems analysis and modelling; recommendations of the most suitable partnerships.

The methods and instruments of investigation are in relation to the newest approaches. The project results will be highly disseminated by publication in international journals with impact, a monograph, communicated in international conference, in PhD theses.
